UKSPA is a new, free community for individuals working in UK school photography. Here is the thinking behind it, where things stand, and what it is not.
School photography is demanding work: volume photo days, tight school calendars, parent expectations, data protection and safeguarding, and relationships with schools that have to be earned and kept. The people who do it well are skilled and careful.
But there has been no obvious shared place to ask the everyday questions, compare notes on how others handle them, or find out what good practice looks like. Sole traders, people employed by larger companies, freelancers and newcomers often learn the job in isolation.
UKSPA is an attempt to change that: a place to share experience, find support, improve workflows, help people who are new to the work, and make it easier for independent businesses to collaborate. It does not speak for the whole industry, and it does not set rules for anyone.

Set-ups in echoey halls. Backdrop creases at five to nine. The careful work behind every school portrait. UKSPA is being shaped by people who do that work.
A society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they may never sit in.The long view behind UKSPA
The aim is that UKSPA is not controlled by any one business, photographer or supplier, and that the people who take part shape what it does. How that works in practice will be developed in the open as more people join.
UKSPA is free to join. The first job is to provide things people find genuinely useful, and to find out from them what that is.
UKSPA helps people improve through practical resources, shared experience and working together. It is not a regulator and does not inspect, accredit or certify anyone. Accreditation is outside the current scope.
Members run separate businesses that make their own commercial decisions. UKSPA does not set, recommend or coordinate prices or commission rates. Business support is about understanding your own costs and running sustainably.
UKSPA is at its founding stage. Some things are available now; others are possibilities that will depend on what members want.
Anyone working in school photography can create a free account. The questionnaire asks what would help people most.
Practical templates and guidance are being prepared for the Resource Centre.
Regional contacts, mentoring, webinars or supplier information are possible priorities, depending on what people tell us. None of them is running yet.
How UKSPA is run, and by whom, will be developed transparently as participation grows.
UKSPA has been started by a small founding group of people who work in school photography. It is not yet a legal organisation in its own right.
The intention is an independent, member-led community. The proposed legal structure is a Community Interest Company (CIC), a UK company form for organisations that exist to benefit a community. UKSPA has not been incorporated as a CIC, and its constitution has not been written. When those things happen, the details will be published here.
How UKSPA is governed, including how members can take part in decisions, will be worked out and explained openly as participation grows.
Started by a small group of people in school photography.
A Community Interest Company is the proposed structure.
Developed and explained as more people take part.
